About The Position

The Senior Academic Advisor in the Academy Program within the Office of Academic Affairs is a fully experienced professional providing comprehensive academic counseling/advising to College Credit Plus (CCP) students within the OSU Academy Program and reports to the Program Director within the OSU Academy. The Senior Academic Advisor fosters student success by defining and implementing proactive strategies that help students stay on track to fulfill their educational goals. The individual in this role advises CCP students on university policy and procedures, state CCP policy and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters. Advises new Academy students during Orientation scheduling appointments. Welcomes new Academy students into the program, helping them prepare for CCP enrollment at Ohio State University. The Senior Academic Advisor provides comprehensive one-on-one advising to CCP students, counseling them on general education, OT-36, prerequisite requirements, transferring OSU coursework, and aligning CCP enrollment with high school graduation requirements. In doing so, the Senior Academic Advisor develops relationships with students that support increasing autonomy and helps them connect academic interests to broader educational and career goals. Provides guidance for prospective students through the application process and participates in the review of applications for both the Columbus campus and regional campuses. Partners with representatives in both admissions and advising on all campuses. The Senior Academic Advisor supports students experiencing academic challenges, facilitates appropriate academic actions such as add/drops, withdrawals, and program changes, and consistently directs students to relevant campus resources. Through this work, they identify opportunities for new resources and collaborations to enhance student support, with an emphasis on collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, providing Academy students with information about classes, majors, and minors within the college. Monitors student progress and intervene appropriately. Consistently refers advisees to appropriate university resources and offices. Responds to student emails and completes advising notes in a timely manner. In addition to advising, the Senior Academic Advisor supports the unit's operational needs. Assists in the creation, revision, and evaluation of relevant programs and presentations, including but not limited to, CCP night overviews, Orientation, and scheduling workshops. Works on assigned advising projects. Identifies new resources and collaborations for resolving student cases. Actively engages with professional development to gain further knowledge to best serve CCP students. Serves as informal resource to less experienced colleagues. May represent the department on committees across campus. The Senior Academic Advisor initiates and leads special projects, collaborates on projects led by others within or external partners, performs administrative tasks to support counselling related functions assigned by Program Director. Performs other duties as assigned. This position has the option of a hybrid work environment. Note: Some evenings and weekends required.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or 2+ years of equivalent experience.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Understands and follows FERPA guidelines and engages in discussions with stakeholders.
  • Able to readily articulate specific information on course content, programs, and policies, including specialty areas.
  • Able to assess a student's potential for success in a field of study and make appropriate referrals.
  • Demonstrates and applies historical knowledge of the academic advising profession, including GE, enrollment plans, changing demographics, etc.
  • Able to apply theory to advising practice.
  • Demonstrates advanced communication skills.
  • Able to provide detail and depth to information conveyed.
  • Able to tailor advising interactions to accommodate or incorporate students’ personal/cultural identity.
  • Effectively builds relationships with students and colleagues and possesses adaptive relational skills.
  • Discusses relevance of program to students’ goals.
  • Requires some evening, weekend and in-state travel.
