The Emergency Medicine Scribe supports physicians and other healthcare providers by documenting care and working alongside them in a clinical setting. The role offers firsthand exposure to emergency medicine, practical healthcare experience, and opportunities to build medical terminology knowledge, professional networks, and a résumé. It is intended for undergraduates, post-baccalaureate students, or people taking time before medical, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner school. Scribe hours count toward clinical training for most PA and medical school programs. Mentorship opportunities are available through scribe alumni. The position is based at Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee, California, a critical access hospital with 25 acute care beds and an 18-bed Emergency Department. The hospital is an ACS-certified Level III Trauma Center with seasonal ED census of 15,000 patients, onsite POCUS, all sub-specialty backups, and Vituity scribe support. The emergency department experiences substantial seasonal variation and sports-related injuries and polytrauma. Scribes work two to three shifts per week, including weekends and a holiday, and are expected to commit continuously to the site for one year. The role requires following physicians for extended periods, standing and walking, and working effectively in a stressful, fast-paced environment. The hourly rate is $19.28.
