Scientist (Facility Director)

University of Miami•Coral Gables, FL

About The Position

The Frost Institute for Chemistry and Molecular Science at the University of Miami seeks a Scientist (Facility Director) for its Center for Mass Spectrometry. The center supports research in proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, mass measurements, post-translational modifications and phosphorylation, megadalton macromolecular complexes, ligand, cofactor, lipid and drug binding, macromolecular dynamics through hydrogen-deuterium exchange, and proximity relationships through crosslinking. The role provides high-end technical leadership for the mass spectrometry core facility, maintains advanced instrumentation, shapes scientific strategy, and delivers analytical services for chemistry and molecular biology research. The Scientist partners with investigators on experimental design, sample preparation, protocols, and data analysis; oversees facility operations and staff training; and contributes to research manuscripts, publications, proposals, grants, reports, and patent applications. The position requires expertise in biochemical sample processing, quantitative proteomics workflows, and mass spectrometry data analysis, as well as strong critical thinking to troubleshoot experimental challenges and interpret complex data.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience operating high-resolution mass spectrometers, including the Thermo Fisher Orbitrap Ascend Tribid, Orbitrap Exploris 480 for Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Mass Spectrometry (HDX-MS), and Q Exactive UHMR Hybrid.
  • Proven track record of managing a shared resource or research laboratory setting.
  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Expertise in biochemical sample processing, quantitative proteomics workflows (e.g., TMT, DIA, DDA, PRM, and HDX-MS), and mass spectrometry data analysis software.
  • Appropriate combinations of relevant education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the daily operations of the mass spectrometry core facility and provide high-end technical leadership.
  • Maintain cutting-edge instrumentation, lead scientific strategy, and provide advanced analytical services for chemistry and molecular biology research.
  • Partner with investigators on mass spectrometry experimental design, sample preparation, protocols, and data analysis.
  • Coordinate with Thermo Fisher engineers to maximize instrument uptime; perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of high-resolution mass spectrometers and liquid chromatography systems.
  • Maintain sample processing records, scheduling, and usage logs for reporting and billing.
  • Participate in writing research manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Direct the training and instruction of students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members.
  • Oversee research employees, students, and other relevant staff.
  • Author scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications.
  • Assist in developing training materials for research staff.
  • Plan experiments, and record and analyze findings.
  • Prepare research proposals and funding applications.
  • Ensure activities comply with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.
  • Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
