About The Position

Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Field Applications Scientist to serve as a subject matter expert in protein expression workflows, particularly transient protein expression in mammalian cell systems. The role combines scientific expertise with customer engagement, training, troubleshooting, and commercial support to help customers optimize workflows and advance research and innovation. As part of the Cell Biology Field Applications team, the Scientist works within a multidisciplinary, matrixed organization alongside commercial representatives, R&D scientists, Product Management, Market Development, and other technical specialists. The position provides pre- and post-sales scientific support, seminars and demonstrations, internal and external training, and assistance with complex customer workflow challenges. It also connects protein expression with adjacent and downstream workflows, including protein purification, characterization, and analysis. The position covers Washington and Oregon and is remote, with travel required throughout the assigned territory. The work schedule is standard Monday through Friday. Work may take place in laboratory and office settings and involve PPE and hazardous or toxic materials.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree plus 5 years of experience, or bachelor's degree plus 7 years of experience, with relevant hands-on experience in protein expression workflows.
  • Advanced practical knowledge of transient protein expression, transfection and delivery, and protein production using mammalian cell systems.
  • Demonstrated technical problem-solving and method-development expertise for optimizing protein expression workflows, including cell culture conditions, transfection parameters, expression conditions, scale-up, harvest, and assessment of protein yield and quality.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific concepts into practical recommendations for customers with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with presentation and training capabilities for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal teams and external customers.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a results-oriented environment.

  • Fluent English.
  • Valid driver's license and passport required for travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with downstream protein workflows, including protein purification and characterization, protein folding, aggregation, post-translational modifications, and assessment of protein quality or function.
  • Experience with suspension cell culture and scale-up workflows.
  • Experience with multiple protein-expression modalities, such as antibodies, recombinant proteins, difficult-to-express proteins, or other biologically relevant targets.
  • Additional languages.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in protein expression workflows, especially transient protein expression in mammalian cell systems.
  • Provide pre- and post-sales scientific support to customers.
  • Deliver seminars, demonstrations, and internal and external training.
  • Partner with customers to troubleshoot and resolve complex workflow challenges.
  • Provide practical recommendations to optimize protein expression workflows.
  • Connect protein expression workflows with downstream workflows such as protein purification, characterization, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with commercial representatives, R&D scientists, Product Management, Market Development, and other technical specialists.
