About The Position

The Sanitation Worker performs sanitation collection services for City of Cheyenne commercial and residential accounts and carries out minor maintenance and cleaning activities on sanitation heavy equipment, at the Transfer Station, and on City grounds. The role includes assisting with sanitation collection equipment and route-driver equipment checks and maintenance, maintaining cleanliness and controlling litter in containment areas and throughout the City, and helping customers at the Transfer Station. The employee works under the supervision of assigned drivers, a foreman, and/or the Transfer Station Manager. Work takes place across multiple sites in a field environment and may involve noise, dust, smoke, fumes, gases, infectious materials, heavy sanitation equipment, and inclement weather.

Requirements

Preferred high school diploma or GED.
Preferred two years of work experience.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people encountered during work.
Knowledge of sanitation collection principles and practices.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to perform sanitation services for commercial and residential accounts.
Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, or local laws, regulations, or ordinances.
Knowledge of City street layout.
Ability to perform minor maintenance on sanitation heavy equipment.
Ability to work in all types of weather conditions, including rain, snow, freezing temperatures, sunny conditions, and wind.
Ability to maintain the audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for observing, communicating, reading, and writing.
Physical ability to operate assigned equipment, walk, stand, kneel, bend repeatedly, sit for prolonged periods, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Mental capacity to make sound decisions and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.

Responsibilities

Perform sanitation collection services for City commercial and residential accounts.
Perform minor maintenance on sanitation heavy equipment, clean sanitation equipment, and clean and maintain the dumpster yard.
Follow safe work practices and procedures.
Clean, maintain, and control litter around containment areas, the Transfer Station, and throughout the City of Cheyenne.
Assist in operating sanitation collection equipment.
Assist the route driver with daily pre- and post-operation checks and sanitation equipment maintenance.
Wear designated personal protective equipment when required, including a hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, and gloves.
Operate a flatbed truck to deliver, repair, replace, or pick up garbage containers.
Use the Fleetmind system during the collection process.
Report safety issues to a supervisor and/or Safety Coordinator.
Greet customers visiting the Transfer Station, inspect loads, and direct traffic.
Promote safe working practices and encourage others to follow safety policies.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
