About The Position

The Safety Training Manager is responsible for developing and implementing safety programs, conducting investigations, and ensuring compliance with various regulations. This role involves strategic planning, safety management system implementation, safety assurance, and safety promotion to foster a strong safety culture within the organization. The position requires a high school diploma, a Class “B” Commercial Driver License, and specific certifications and knowledge related to transportation safety, DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards, and ADA requirements. The manager will also oversee driver training and safety courses, and conduct monthly safety meetings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; college degree preferred
  • Certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer
  • Class “B” Commercial Driver License
  • Airbrakes and Passenger endorsements (preferred)
  • Valid active medical examiners certificate
  • At least 3 years’ progressive transit experience with commercial class “B” vehicles in a transit system
  • Knowledgeable with DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards and ADA requirements
  • Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures
  • Experience conducting investigations, analyzing data, and identifying and recommending corrective action
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguarding of sensitive material
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct oral presentations, relaying technical information in understandable terms
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce
  • Working knowledge of adult education principles and practices
  • Skills to write and express oneself orally in a logical, comprehensive, and intelligent manner
  • Good organizational skills
  • Temperament necessary for maintaining amiable relations with various levels of company personnel
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word
  • Ability to interpret and explain regulations to others
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to prioritize

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate monthly safety reporting, including performance trends in safety KPIs, delivery against location safety plans, and safety risk assessment.
  • Inform the location leadership team of safety performance and provide timely alerts.
  • Drive a continuous improvement culture in safety performance by collaborating with locations to improve leading and lagging indicators (e.g., AFR and IFR).
  • Chair Safety and Accident Review committees.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries, including accident investigation, reports, files, and follow-up with claims offices and adjusters.
  • Direct the Drug and Alcohol Program (FTA) for the location to ensure federal and corporate compliance.
  • Manage Third Party Administrators and Vendors.
  • Lead the site implementation of the Safety Management System Plan, comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and tools.
  • Monitor compliance with the KTA’s SMS policies and procedures, conducting an annual safety audit.
  • Ensure all relevant statutory and regulatory safety policies are applied and adhered to.
  • Assist the maintenance manager in ensuring compliance with environmental policies and regulations.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of risk control strategies.
  • Identify and assess new hazards in the workplace.
  • Oversee ongoing monitoring and recording of safety performance.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of safety where safety is a primary consideration for all employees.
  • Contribute to the safety culture through exemplary safety-oriented behaviors.
  • Ensure a just culture within the organization where employees are treated fairly and understand their contribution to the safety philosophy.
  • Oversee classroom and designated instructors to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency in training methods.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of driver training and safety courses, including new hire and accident retraining.
  • Plan, schedule, and deliver monthly safety meetings.
