The Safety Coordinator plays a crucial role in minimizing job-related accidents, monitoring operations for hazards, and promoting occupational health and safety awareness.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, present information, and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence.
  • Basic understanding of WISHA/OSHA and familiarity with DOSH requirements.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships.
  • Detail-oriented, well-organized & able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work independently with limited supervision while still being a team player.
  • Must be dependable, organized, and self-motivated.
  • Strong presentation skills to be able to speak effectively before small and large groups of managers, customers, and/or employees.
  • Physically able to negotiate difficult conditions often encountered on job sites, including climbing steep stairs, riding in scissor lifts and boom lifts, and working in hot and cold environments.
  • Must be capable of obtaining customer and general contractor approval to walk job sites.
  • Ability to walk and maintain balance over rough, icy, or muddy ground, climb stairs and ladders, work safely at heights without fear, and work effectively while exposed to the weather for long periods.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 years administrative assistant experience
  • 1 year experience in safety in the construction industry
  • Intermediate PC skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the ability to learn and use multiple other types of computer systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general administrative support including typing, copying, routing, faxing, mailing, filing, etc. to the Safety Team.
  • Compile and maintain a supply of new hire and safety packets for new union employees.
  • Compile records neatly and concisely to facilitate company-wide gathering of information relating to safety and health.
  • Order, receive, stock, and track safety inventory.
  • Email data into and maintain the Safety database system.
  • Design and run reports from the Safety database system.
  • Identify and recommend project customizations, enhancements, or workarounds to enhance the system.
  • Monitor expiring certification and safety training requirements.
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and administrator for the Safety database system.
  • Investigate accidents in the shop, incidents, and "near misses" and manage the accident investigation process.
  • Investigate accidents and injuries to determine their causes and prevent future occurrences.
  • Interview customers, managers, and employees to understand work environments and incidents leading to accidents or injuries.
  • Assist with prompt response to real and perceived emergencies (e.g., hazardous materials spills, fire alarms, odors, indoor air quality concerns) during regular working hours.
  • Tour shops regularly with Foremen, Superintendents, and Project Managers to assist in identifying jobsite hazards, unsafe employee work habits, and intervene in unsafe activities or operations.
  • Conduct new hire orientation and site-specific safety training for new Hermanson Employees.
  • Organize and conduct training for crews on topics such as fork-lift, aerial lift, fall protection, trenching excavation, confined space, etc.
  • Administer the random drug and alcohol testing program, including receiving test results and determining impact on driver qualification status.
  • Stay abreast of legal changes to safety and health codes.
