About The Position

Block by Block California employs Ambassadors to make public spaces friendlier, safer, and cleaner for the communities they serve. The Safety Ambassador patrols an assigned zone, assists pedestrians and visitors, observes and reports unwanted behavior, and engages with local businesses. The position involves working outdoors in all conditions and continuously walking or traversing the area, including by bicycle, during an eight-hour shift. Experience is not required; training is provided.

Requirements

• An active California Guard Card is required.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be able to walk or traverse, including by riding a bike, continuously during an eight-hour shift, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all conditions.
• Must be able to speak, read, and write English to create basic reports.

Responsibilities

• Patrol the assigned zone on foot and/or by bike as a deterrent and watch for unwanted behavior and activity.
• Provide information, assistance, and directions to pedestrians and visitors while maintaining a positive, professional demeanor.
• Watch for unwanted behavior or criminal activity and report it to local authorities through established communication methods.
• Accurately describe persons, vehicles, and other identifiers when reporting activity.
• Firmly and courteously request compliance from people violating low-level quality-of-life rules, such as those involving panhandling, loitering, or disruptive behavior.
• Acknowledge and engage pedestrians with a friendly greeting or smile and provide directions and city information.
• Visit a specified number of zone businesses to share information and gather contact information.
• Complete basic daily reports of tasks completed.
