About The Position

This position is for a Roving Dental Assistant 2/Dental Care Coordinator at Central Administration (CTRS) in Salem, Oregon, with travel to Westside Institutions as needed. The role involves facilitating patient dental care through a pilot program focused on coordinating care and scheduling patients for both in-house and outside treatment. A key aspect of this role is working with the new Fusion Electronic Health Record. The position also requires performing patient care and document review to ensure treatment aligns with dentist-prescribed care plans. Direct assistance to the dentist at various institutions on the west side of the state is also a responsibility, ensuring instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly maintained. The role demands adaptability to immediate procedure modifications based on dentist's chairside expectations, accurate recording of dental pathology, and performing specific Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) duties as assigned. Management of dental materials, instruments, and equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting, sterilization, inventory, and maintenance, is crucial. The position also involves preparing the dental operatory, adhering to infection control guidelines, and coordinating equipment maintenance and repair. Responsibilities extend to managing treatment lists, scheduling patients, ensuring accuracy of health records, submitting statistical data, coordinating with security staff for isolated populations, responding to emergency treatment requests, and addressing dental treatment queries from other staff. This position is represented by AFSCME and may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through PERS.

Requirements

  • One year of support experience (six months of which must be chairside dental assisting experience) AND possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation card AND Certification for Radiologic Proficiency.
  • OR A graduate of a dental assisting program AND possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation card AND Certification for Radiologic Proficiency AND certification by the Oregon State Board of Dentistry for expanded functions (EFDA).
  • Note: Department of Corrections requires certification by the Dental Assistant National Board for expanded functions (EFDA).
  • Underfill option: Six months of general support experience or equivalent training and experience AND a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation card at the time of appointment.
  • Must be able to obtain certification by the Oregon State Board of Dentistry for Radiologic Proficiency within four months of appointment.

  • Coordinates responses from provider.
  • Strong computer skills in maintaining and saving data information in applicable software.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and word are vital.
  • Experience with digital radiographs.
  • Ability to work with adults in custody.
  • Pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
  • Must not have engaged in, been convicted of, or been civilly or administratively adjudicated for engaging in sexual abuse in confinement settings (PREA requirement).

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate patient dental care by coordinating care and scheduling patients for in-house and outside treatment.
  • Work with the new Fusion Electronic Health Record.
  • Perform patient care and document review to ensure treatment aligns with care plans.
  • Provide direct assistance to the dentist at various institutions, ensuring instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Assure chairside skills conform to the assigned dentist's treatment methodology, ensuring patient safety and maximizing clinic productivity.
  • Record dental pathology and conditions on appropriate forms as assessed by the dentist.
  • Perform EFDA duties as assigned by the treating dentist, including but not limited to: removing temporary crowns, preparing teeth for permanent crown cementation, preliminary fitting and adjusting crowns, placing and removing matrix retainers, removing excess cement, fabricating and cementing temporary crowns, re-cementing temporary or permanent crowns, polishing teeth, placing rubber dams and clamps, taking and pouring alginate impressions.
  • Manage dental materials, instruments, and equipment, including proper cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization procedures.
  • Assure adequate stock of dental materials with proper expiration dates and maintain dental hand pieces.
  • Manage instrument inventory and security counts, ensuring security over all instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain dental burs as directed by the assigned dentist.
  • Prepare the dental operatory for patient treatment, following all infection control guidelines.
  • Assure proper instruments and supplies are set up for specific dental procedures.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair of equipment with DOC staff and contracted technicians.
  • Conduct inventories and order tools and supplies as needed.
  • Respond to written and verbal requests for treatment or coordinate response from provider.
  • Assure treatment lists are accurate and current, potentially using Microsoft Word or Excel.
  • Schedule patients to be seen by providers.
  • Assure information in the Inmate Health Plan (DOC 400) and electronic health record is accurate, reflecting patients seen and treatments provided using appropriate dental abbreviations.
  • Submit statistical data as directed by the provider.
  • Coordinate with security staff to treat patients in isolated populations.
  • Respond to requests for emergency treatment.
  • Address questions from other DOC staff about dental treatment.
