About The Position

Performs chemical, physical, and biological analysis of wastewater, storm water, and in support of the wastewater treatment plant. Assist with special projects. Performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. This position has an option to underfill as a Wastewater Laboratory Technician Trainee. The entire range of pay for this position is posted, with typical starting pay at the beginning of the range, depending on qualifications.

Requirements

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Wastewater Laboratory Technician or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Related coursework can be substituted for working experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience in the areas of biology, microbiology, chemistry, or related fields preferred.
  • Previous SCADA experience preferred.
  • Must know the principles, procedures, methods, and equipment involved in wastewater treatment operations.
  • Must be able to perform all job duties in each position up to their current level.
  • Must have knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, and procedures, principles and practices of qualitative and quantitative chemistry, mathematics, biology, microbiology and bacteriology, principles of chemical and physical analysis, modern laboratory procedures, methods and computer equipment, sampling procedures and field equipment, mathematics, occupational hazards and standard safety practices, and pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Must have the ability to conduct chemical, biological and bacteriological examinations, and analyses, conduct mathematical calculations, operate analytical laboratory instruments, use and maintain laboratory equipment, use computers and a variety of computer software programs, prepare clear, concise and technical reports, communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must have effective time management skills.
  • Must have good cognitive and analytical skills, be able to handle stressful situations, quickly assess or judge situations and make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility.

  • Must possess a Missouri Class "C" Wastewater Operator's Certificate or obtain such accreditation within the first year of employment.
  • Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
  • Must work a rotating on-call schedule, and subject to emergency call-in.
  • Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.

Nice To Haves

  • A Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred with airbrakes and tanker endorsements.
  • Previous OSHA or public safety training or certifications preferred: confined space entry, chemical spill response, and National Incident Management System.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine chemical and physical analysis of wastewater and storm water to ensure compliance with federal environmental compliance regulations.
  • Participates in the collection of water samples of plant influent at various stages of treatment and of plant effluent.
  • Coordinates with outsourced lab services as needed.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, equipment, apparatus and accessories, and other supplies needed at the lab.
  • Conducts monthly inventory of chemicals, reagents, solutions, and other supplies and equipment essential to laboratory operation.
  • Purchases lab supplies as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains technical reports on results of analyses conducted.
  • Develops, maintains, & modifies lab-specific SOPs as needed.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, calibrates, and maintains equipment and apparatus used in all tests and analysis.
  • Prepares microbiological media.
  • Maintains accurate files, submits test results, and generates necessary reports.
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance tests and maintains quality control procedures in the laboratory.
  • Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures as well as federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Cleans laboratory testing equipment.
  • Provides lab training to plant personnel on proper lab methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Assists in the overall operations, processes, and beautification of the WWTP.
  • Performs routine upkeep and maintenance of WWTP equipment, including but not limited to, oil changes, greasings, etc.
  • Reports all preventative maintenance and equipment issues to leadership for service or repair.
  • Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
  • Attends training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
  • Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
