About The Position

Performs specialized skilled work in the operation and routine maintenance of wastewater treatment plant and related procedures. This role involves operating and maintaining equipment in an activated sludge treatment plant, including conventional and tertiary treatment units. The position also includes routine daily observations, maintenance tasks, assisting in repairs, collecting samples, performing basic laboratory analysis, and operating a wastewater sludge truck. There is an option to overfill as Wastewater Operator II.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience at Wastewater Maintenance Trainee or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of wastewater treatment operations.
  • Effective communication through verbal skills.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Cognitive and analytical skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to quickly assess or judge situations.
  • Ability to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to understand written descriptions in technical terminology.
  • Ability to memorize and retain information without reliance on written records or manuals.
  • Proficiency in sample collection and basic laboratory procedures.
  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, calculators, copy/fax machines, and familiar with Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team.
  • Overall professionalism displaying the utmost integrity, discretion, courtesy, cooperation, discipline, and behavior.
  • Must possess a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrakes and tanker endorsements.
  • Must possess a Class “D” Missouri Wastewater Operator’s License.
  • Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
  • Subject to random substance abuse testing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs operations and maintenance on equipment and machinery in an activated sludge treatment plant, including conventional and tertiary treatment units such as digesters, primary units, secondary units, and filters.
  • Performs routine daily observations of the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Performs maintenance tasks, including general cleaning, preventative maintenance of equipment, and assisting in repairs of equipment and vehicles.
  • Assists in the preventative maintenance on various plant equipment including motors, pumps, generators, engines, air compressors, surface aerators, mixers, screening devices, instrumentation, and control devices.
  • Maintains records and/or logs of work performed.
  • Collects samples and completes basic laboratory analysis as required.
  • Operates wastewater sludge truck for hauling sludge.
  • Assists in the beautification of City grounds.
  • Keeps records and logs as required.
  • Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
  • Attends training sessions.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
  • Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
