About The Position

Western State Hospital is hiring an RN II for its Admissions Office/Float position. The role provides professional nursing coverage for the Admissions Office and hospital-wide float coverage when Admissions Office coverage is not required. The RN completes admission nursing processes for newly admitted patients; provides age-appropriate psychiatric nursing care; develops and implements individualized care plans; administers medications and treatments; responds to behavioral and medical emergencies; and ensures timely, accurate clinical documentation. The position covers for the Admissions Office nurse during leave and may be assigned to inpatient units according to staffing and patient-care needs. On an inpatient unit, the RN may perform charge nurse responsibilities, coordinate staff assignments, communicate significant patient and staffing concerns, and support safe, effective nursing care. The RN serves as a clinical resource and role model, supports orientation and training, collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, participates in performance improvement, and promotes recovery-oriented, trauma-informed care. Flexibility and the ability to move between Admissions Office work and inpatient assignments are essential. Western State Hospital is a 302-bed Joint Commission- and CMS-accredited psychiatric facility in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Its nursing department provides 24-hour direct care to psychiatric patients, working with multidisciplinary teams to support patients’ physical, mental, and social functioning and facilitate discharge to less restrictive settings.
