About The Position

The RN provides professional nursing care in the Emergency Department, guided by the ANA Standards of Professional Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics. The role applies nursing principles and procedures to assess patients, plan and deliver care, and evaluate outcomes. The RN records medical histories and symptoms, assists with diagnostic testing and interpretation of results, operates medical equipment, administers treatments and medications, and supports patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN develops or contributes to individualized, evidence-based care plans; administers medications and therapies; manages intravenous lines; monitors and documents patient status; and consults with physicians and other clinicians. The RN educates patients and families about illnesses or injuries, post-treatment and home-care needs, nutrition, exercise, and medication or therapy self-administration. The role also provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates appropriately, supports professional development, and precepts new staff and students. The RN systematically collects and analyzes health data, establishes expected outcomes, implements appropriate interventions—including emergency and resuscitative measures—and evaluates patient progress and care quality. Care is family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and attentive to physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs. The RN collaborates with patients, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues; applies ethical principles; contributes to evidence-based practice and quality improvement; and uses resources effectively while considering safety, effectiveness, and cost.
