About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Respite Shift Coordinator to be responsible for the shift coordinator role, including dispensing medication, completing safety checks, logbook recordings, intake and discharge. The role ensures participant safety throughout the night with documented half-hourly room checks. The coordinator is responsible for meeting the physical, emotional, medical, and behavioral needs of program participants. This includes planning menus according to Canada's Food Guide, maintaining inventory, generating shopping lists, and preparing meals/snacks. Primary responsibility for house maintenance duties, and the organization and maintenance of property and program supplies are also key. The role involves advocating for participants to promote health and well-being, ensuring participants follow personal care routines, and providing intervention for behavioral challenges. Dispensing medication as required and ensuring accurate charting are critical. Liaising with parents, caregivers, and community partners is also part of the role. Communication and administration involve proper recording in daily logs, shift change books, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, and restraint forms. Identified needs are to be reported to team members, the Respite Program Supervisor, and/or On-Call designate and parent/usual caregiver. Assistance with maintaining and updating participant records and program documentation is also required. On-call responsibilities include providing after-hours support and consultation to Respite staff, maintaining documentation of calls, assisting with basic utility and maintenance concerns, and notifying secondary on-call staff of serious occurrences. Assistance and appropriate notifications are required in the event of emergencies such as fire, evacuation, death, missing person, major maintenance issues, or serious accidents/injuries requiring hospitalization. Direct care support is provided only as required. Other position-related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience in a social services setting providing direct care to children, youth and adults who have intellectual disabilities; dealing with crises.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Current Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Maintain information in confidence as required.
  • Ability to participate as an active team member in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.

  • Valid Ontario Class “G” or “G2” Driver’s License is required, current original copy of driver’s abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is also required.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening including a Broad Record Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

Responsibilities

  • Dispensing medication, completing safety checks, logbook recordings, intake and discharge.

  • Complete meal/ snack preparation for the following day as outlined on the approved menu.
  • Primary responsibility for house maintenance duties as outlined under ‘shift responsibilities’ as well as the organization and maintenance of property and program supplies.
  • Advocate on behalf of the program participants to promote health and well-being.
  • Ensure that participants follow through on personal care routines and routines of daily living.
  • Provide intervention for any behavioural challenges.
  • Dispense medication as required and ensure that all medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies.
  • Liaise with parents, caregivers, community partners as required.
  • Ensure proper recording in the daily log, shift change book, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, restraint forms, etc.
  • Report any identified needs to team members, Respite Program Supervisor and/or On –Call designate and parent/usual caregiver.
  • Assist the Respite Program Supervisor in the maintenance and updating of participant records and other program documentation.
  • Provide on-call after-hours support and consultation to Respite staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of calls received.
  • Provide assistance to address basic utility concerns; maintenance issues.
  • Notify secondary on-call staff of any serious occurrences.
  • Provide assistance including appropriate notifications in the event of an emergency such as fire, evacuation, death, missing person, major maintenance issues, serious accident and/or injury requiring hospitalization.
  • Provide direct care support only as required.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.
