About The Position

This is a Permanent Full Time Position. Reporting to the Program Supervisor – West Desk, this position provides a welcoming, safe and secure environment for men accessing The Salvation Army Men’s Shelter/Housing Program, and supports them in providing referrals to housing, community programming and needed resources. This position also provides supervision, support, coaching, and guidance to Resident Support Workers.

Requirements

  • Completion of two (2) years of Community College in a related field (i.e., social work)
  • Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Current Standard First Aid certification with Level A or C CPR from an Alberta approved training provider.
  • Incumbents with a Social Work diploma or degree must be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
  • At least one year of prior related supervisory experience in frontline work in a social service setting, life skills and experience in a related field
  • Understanding of, and ability to, work with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities that are vulnerable and find themselves homeless
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills including MS Outlook, Word, Excel and familiarity with databases
  • Responsive to safely resolve crisis situations and respond nonjudgmentally to problematic behaviors
  • Attentive listening and observation of body language and able to monitor and read the environment
  • Demonstrated trauma informed care, non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation skills; ability to diffuse difficult situations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information to residents and community partners
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Able to pack and lift residents' belongings and engage in recreational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Works as part of team with Resident Support Workers, volunteers, and practicum students to ensure job duties are completed as needed.
  • Conducts resident intakes, goal setting and follow ups.
  • Monitors the activities of residents and maintains availability of personal, practical, and moral support including providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medication.
  • Ensures resident assessment, intake and orientation are being completed correctly, with dignity and respect for each person participating in the process.
  • Works collaboratively with agencies (e.g., PACT, SOS, DOAP).
  • Works to address issues that arise within the building with residents or staff.
  • Provides resident advocacy as needed.
  • Reviews policies, procedures, and program guidelines; provide suggestions for changes as needed.
  • Reviews information and resident forms to ensure correct information and relevance.
  • Reviews and updates training manuals to ensure information is current.
  • Conducts monthly tool, medication, and audits.
  • Completes resident room inspections and follow up as needed or directed.
  • Audits resident files.
  • Assists the Program Supervisor in reviewing resumes and interviewing Resident Support Worker candidates, students, and volunteers.
  • Provides orientation and training to new RSWs, students and volunteers, as well as providing on-shift coaching.
  • Ensures Resident Support Worker shifts are always covered.
  • Assists the Program Manager in tracking that Resident Support Workers and volunteers complete mandatory training/certifications, as required, and makes suggestions for additional training needed.
  • Answers program telephones and records/remits message.
  • Completes various documentation such as daily logbooks, daily report, incident reports, vacation request, communication book etc., as required.
  • Prepares receipts for various fees such as occupancy fees, donations, meals, laundry and vendor machine refunds.
  • Audits resident files as per procedures and accreditation standards.
  • Attends staff meetings and case conferences.
