About The Position

FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, invites applications for the position of Resident Director (Multiple Vacancies). Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area. JOB SUMMARY The Resident Director is a live-in professional responsible for the operation of a residence hall housing up to 221 residents. The Resident Director is responsible for shaping the environment and experiences of residential students by providing services and programs that focus on best practices in student housing and student development theory.

Requirements

  • Ability to work collaboratively with departmental and university personnel and administration
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in public relations activities, to include television and radio interviews, and press conferences, as appropriate
  • Demonstrated ability to handle high levels of stress and anxiety
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and SIAC rules and regulations governing recruitment, eligibility and related functions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with departmental and university personnel and administration
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least two years of experience planning events/programs, preferably in educational settings.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite or Google Suite platforms (e.g., email, word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, calendar)
  • The incumbent must have the ability and willingness to assume shared responsibility for the residence hall system-wide on-call duty and respond to crises and emergencies
  • The incumbent must have strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate a positive and engaging living environment that fosters belonging, encourages relationship-building, and supports student success within the residential community.
  • Maintain visibility and accessibility by attending community events, touring residence halls regularly, and interacting consistently with residents.
  • Provide personal, academic, social, and career-related support to students while connecting them with appropriate campus resources and services.
  • Utilize institutional data and collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to assess student needs and implement programs that support student engagement and living-learning initiatives.
  • Support special academic and student success groups within the residence hall, including honors programs and student achievement initiatives.
  • Supervise resident assistants and graduate assistants by conducting staff meetings, one-on-one sessions, professional development activities, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure staff appropriately address, document, and follow up on student behavioral concerns while supporting strategies that promote student achievement and engagement.
  • Review incident and police reports, adjudicate student conduct cases, monitor sanctions, and provide proactive educational interventions that encourage responsible decision-making.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies and crises, provide leadership during on-call situations, assist students in distress, and implement university policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Perform administrative responsibilities including managing room assignments, check-ins and check-outs, maintenance follow-ups, emergency contact records, damage billing processes, and environmental assessments of residence halls.
  • Participate in departmental committees, staff recruitment, training, professional development activities, summer assignments, and enrollment initiatives that support university housing operations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism by serving as a positive role model, practicing ethical stewardship of university resources, promoting diversity and inclusion, maintaining collaborative professional relationships, and completing additional duties as assigned.
