About The Position

The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) is an essential live-in staff member of the Islander Housing team, contributing to the intentional design of the residential experience to foster student learning, growth, and success. This role involves frequent and meaningful interactions with students and assists in the administration of various aspects of the residential experience within an assigned area. RLCs are responsible for the selection, training, mentoring, supervision, and evaluation of Resident Assistants (RAs), potentially overseeing an area of up to 1,200 students. They may also lead departmental planning committees, assist with Islander Housing move-in/out processes, and participate in an on-call rotation across two properties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.
  • One (1) year of related experience in housing/residence life.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Teams and Outlook).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other departments and stakeholders, and to build positive relationships with students, parents, staff, faculty, and community partners.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to inspire and motivate student staff members to achieve the highest levels of excellence.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from various backgrounds and communication styles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to housing and residence life, as well as industry best practices.
  • Ability to work on an on-call schedule and travel between campus locations on short notice.

Responsibilities

  • Aids in the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of Resident Assistants (RAs).
  • Ensures frequent contact with RA staff through weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly one-on-one meetings for information exchange, problem-solving, staff development, and other needs.
  • Provides positive and constructive feedback for RAs through formal and informal evaluations.
  • Reads and documents all RA weekly reports and disseminates pertinent information to departmental partners.
  • Develops and facilitates recognition initiatives for student staff and other Islander Housing entities.
  • Maintains visibility throughout the assigned community and engages informally with residents about academic, personal, and community successes, issues, and concerns.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of customer service and student retention initiatives.
  • Demonstrates care, compassion, and follows through with student mental health and roommate-related concerns.
  • Acts as a referral agent to connect students with campus and community resources.
  • Enforces the Student Conduct of Conduct, the Resident Handbook, and local, state, and federal laws.
  • Works cooperatively with other staff members, departments, and offices across the University.
  • Plans and executes programming initiatives in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Supports operations staff by assisting with hall openings and closings, including check-in/check-out, breaks, and holidays.
  • Serves on departmental and campus committees as designated by their supervisor.
  • Supports and administers approved departmental and divisional assessment programs and initiatives.
  • Assists with facilities management via safety inspections, fire drills, weekly walk-throughs, work order submission and follow-up.
  • Works with University Police Department, Counseling Center, and other campus departments on immediate response to incidents in residential areas.
  • Acts as a Mandatory Reporter as required by the Clery Act.
  • Serves in the on-call rotation with other professional staff members.
