About The Position

As a Residence Coordinator at Duke University, you will play a pivotal role in shaping a vibrant, inclusive residential experience grounded in QuadEx values of Belonging, Engagement, and Well-Being. You will build meaningful relationships with diverse students, partner with faculty and campus colleagues, and mentor student leaders, all while cultivating spaces where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive. As a leader within Duke’s residential community, you will drive student engagement, support holistic development, and contribute to a dynamic campus experience.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field
  • Previous experience in Residence Life/Student Housing/Living Learning Communities.
  • Experience in collaborating and developing initiatives and programs focused on creating social activities, partnering with student leaders and campus staff and faculty partners.
  • Demonstrated ability in advising, supporting, and challenging student leaders/organizations, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to use excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, including report writing
  • Excellent active listening skills
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve multiple complex problems in a timely manner, decision making, and goal setting in group situations
  • Ability to follow established protocols to coordinate and lead crisis interventions and emergency response when necessary.
  • A general ability to communicate difficult/sensitive information
  • Proficiency with knowledge, skills, and attitudes used in the selection, supervision, motivation, and formal evaluation of student staff
  • Experience in the application of strategies and techniques associated with risk management and crisis management.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability and desire to actively partner with students, faculty, and staff across units and fields of expertise to “envision, plan, and affect change” and work toward common goals
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Proven ability to create learning environments that center inclusion and equity practices and principles
  • Ability to advocate and support the needs of a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Possession of an understanding of current issues and trends in higher education to guide the work of staff and student leaders, as well as inform departmental practice.

Responsibilities

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate graduate and undergraduate student staff (Resident Assistants and Graduate Assistants)
  • Foster leadership growth through coaching, accountability, and skill development
  • Guide staff in building inclusive, connected residential communities
  • Create living environments that support learning, connection, and belonging
  • Collaborate with Faculty-in-Residence, academic partners, and campus stakeholders
  • Advise House/Quad Councils and support student-led initiatives and events
  • Provide guidance, referrals, and support for students of concern in partnership with campus resources
  • Address student conduct matters with a developmental, educational approach
  • Respond to crises and participate in an on-call rotation supporting residential communities
  • Support and advance first-year programming, including high-impact campus initiatives
  • Supervise graduate assistants supporting first-year programs
  • Manage program budgets and assess effectiveness of student engagement initiatives
  • Collaborate with campus partners to deliver large-scale events and programs
  • Create environments rooted in equity, respect, and mutual understanding
  • Address bias-related incidents and support inclusive community standards
  • Model inclusive leadership practices that center student well-being
  • Support key housing operations (move-in/out, occupancy, safety inspections)
  • Manage budgets, space reservations, and administrative responsibilities
  • Contribute to departmental and university-wide initiatives
