Under the direction and guidance of a principal investigator, the Research Postdoctoral Fellow assumes responsibility for an ongoing research project. The role provides experience to extend and refine professional skills, broaden scientific expertise, and develop new research capabilities. The fellow conducts independent scholarly research and contributes to the research project's and group's goals. The fellow participates in project planning and the recording, interpretation, and evaluation of data; communicates research results; and develops technical, laboratory management, and manuscript and grant writing skills. The role also includes participation in seminars, lectures, poster sessions, and national meeting presentations. The fellow may supervise junior laboratory members, develop research methods and protocols, and assist with other research projects. In the Center for Craniofacial Innovation at CHOP Research Institute, the fellow will work on craniofacial developmental biology, genetics, and gene therapy, spanning fundamental research and translational work toward first-in-human treatments. The laboratory studies craniofacial conditions using human subjects and animal models, including mouse, zebrafish, and human embryonic stem cell disease models. Research aims to clarify the developmental genetic basis of craniofacial malformations and develop diagnostics and gene-modifying treatments. Projects include discovering drugs and gene therapy approaches to mitigate malformation phenotypes and target disease-driving cells; several gene therapy projects are advancing toward clinical-trial readiness. The laboratory integrates genetics, gene editing, and experimental models to study human tissue regeneration and disease. Methods and resources include multi-omics, CRISPR, iPSCs, single-cell RNA sequencing, Cut&Run transcriptional analysis, cell transplants, FACS, live confocal labeling and imaging, transgenics, and chemical screening. The laboratory collaborates with the Center for Computational and Genomic Medicine on computational and bioinformatics methods, and with the Center for Gene and Cell Therapy on base editing and vectors. Dedicated human cell, organoid, mouse, and zebrafish facilities are equipped with imaging, injection, and cell-manipulation instruments. Researchers work in an open-format laboratory and have opportunities to participate in scientific seminars and professional development. The position is in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, CHOP Research Institute. A doctorate is required. The role requires the ability to wear a respirator device. Employees working in patient-care buildings or with patient-facing responsibilities must receive an annual influenza vaccine.
