The Postdoctoral Research Fellow is a trainee pursuing advanced studies beyond the doctoral level in preparation for an independent career in a biomedical field. In collaboration with and under the mentorship of the Principal Investigator (PI), the fellow engages in activities that support professional development. The role involves pursuing research under PI supervision while developing skills for independent work, receiving training and contributing to the research team's investigational work, and building proficiency with relevant research tools and equipment. As the fellowship progresses, the fellow is expected to work with increasing independence. The fellow develops expertise in laboratory skills, informatics, physics, or clinical research; contributes new ideas and expertise to the research program; prepares scientific manuscripts under the PI's direction; participates in collaborative meetings and scientific seminars; and may teach and supervise students when appropriate. Near the end of the fellowship, the fellow pursues or secures independent funding under the PI's direction. The position requires adherence to BIDMC institutional policies relating to health and safety, equal opportunity, and data storage and management. The role is classified as light work, involving exertion of up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some work is sedentary, but the employee may need to stand for periods or move throughout the hospital campus. Beth Israel Lahey Health requires staff to be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment.
