About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, with equipment including digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital staff are licensed and trained, and shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call duties.

Relief veterinarians can use flexible online scheduling, choose from weekday and weekend shifts, and set their own rate for each shift. There is no minimum or maximum shift requirement, and veterinarians may continue practice activities outside their Petco shifts. Petco uses an appointment-based model to manage patient flow, while trained staff handle operations so veterinarians can focus on care. The role also includes access to a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, plus a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all functions required for a shift, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
