About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians the opportunity to work in Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Work settings range from preventive wellness visits and vaccinations to diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, depending on the location. Vaccination Clinics do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care; they are primarily located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Total Care hospitals have licensed and trained staff and are equipped for services including dental procedures and surgery. No overnight or emergency on-call shifts are required at Total Care hospitals.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts required, and can choose from weekday and weekend hours. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. Petco uses an appointment-based model to help manage patient flow, and trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Clinic updates are shared through a monthly newsletter. Petco also offers a 15% discount on its products and services.

Colorado state bid rates average $89.00–$112.00 per hour; shift rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals, according to the services offered at the selected location.
• At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At full-service hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
