About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians the opportunity to work at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located inside Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. They are equipped with digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic tables and anesthesia monitoring. Hospital staff are licensed and trained, and relief shifts do not involve overnight or emergency on-call work.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, choose from weekday and weekend hours, and set their own rate for each shift. There is no minimum or maximum number of shifts, and veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts without agency fees. An appointment-based model supports patient flow and timely departures, while trained staff handle clinic operations. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including the ability to perform blood draws and administer vaccines.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
• A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions permitted by applicable state licensing, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• Comply with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
