About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located within Petco stores, with some operating from advanced mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Their equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic tables and anesthesia monitoring. Licensed and trained hospital staff support care delivery, and there are no overnight or emergency on-call shifts.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, choose from weekday and weekend hours, and set their own rate for each shift. There is no minimum or maximum number of shifts, and veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts without agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, while trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Petco provides monthly updates about clinic news, policies, and products, and a 15% discount on Petco products and services. New York state bid rates average $150–$187 per hour; rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At Vaccination Clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
