About The Position
Petco Veterinary Services relief veterinarians work in Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals, providing veterinary care to pets. Scheduling is managed online, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts required and weekday and weekend hours available. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. The appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, and trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. A monthly newsletter provides clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements. Relief veterinarians receive a 15% discount on Petco products and services. Vetco Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement. They do not provide surgery, emergency care, or illness care. Most are located within Petco stores, with some operating from mobile vans. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Hospital equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic tables and full anesthesia monitoring. There are no overnight or emergency on-call shifts. New York state bid rates average $150.00–$187.00 per hour. Shift rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- At vaccination clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
- At full-service hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
- Comply with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
