About The Position
Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located inside Petco stores, with some operating from advanced mobile vans. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Hospital equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. There are no overnight or emergency on-call shifts. Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online with no minimum or maximum shift requirement, choose from weekday and weekend hours, and set their rate for each shift. Veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, with no agency fees. The appointment-based model helps manage patient flow and supports leaving on time, while trained staff handle operational tasks so veterinarians can focus on care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services. The role supports Vetco clinics and hospitals providing veterinary care in 48 states. New York state bid rates average $150.00–$187.00 per hour; rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- At Vaccination Clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
- At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
- Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
