About The Position
Vetco, a division of Petco, is seeking an independent veterinary contractor to provide relief veterinary services. Veterinarians choose shifts through flexible online booking, with no minimum or maximum shift requirement, and set their own rate for each selected shift. Weekday and weekend hours are available, and veterinarians may continue other practice activities outside Vetco shifts. The appointment-based model helps manage patient traffic, and trained staff handle operational tasks so veterinarians can focus on care and patient experience. Relief shifts may be at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care Hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide wellness examinations, preventive vaccinations and medications, heartworm testing, and microchip insertion; they do not provide surgery, emergency care, or sick visits. Clinics are located inside Petco retail locations, and trained staff manage operations and transactions and assist with safe pet restraint. Vetco Total Care Hospital shifts include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Before shifts, veterinarians partner with the area medical director to review case comfort levels. Hospitals have digital patient records, a surgical suite, Butterfly IQ+ handheld ultrasound imaging, digital and dental X-ray, Vetology Radiograph Interpretation AI, and on-site labs. Hospital staff are licensed and trained. There are no overnight shifts or emergency on-call duties. Colorado state bid rates average $89.00–$112.00 per hour. Shift rates may vary by clinic location and selected shift duration.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a state license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
Nice To Haves
- DEA registration in good standing is preferred for full-service Vetco Total Care hospital relief shifts.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts.
- At Vetco Vaccination Clinics, perform wellness examinations, preventive vaccinations and medication services, heartworm testing, and microchip insertion.
- At Vetco Total Care Hospitals, provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, depending on shift and case comfort level.
- Coordinate with the area medical director before hospital shifts to review case comfort levels.
- Meet applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
