About The Position
Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Veterinarians can use flexible online scheduling to choose shifts that suit their lifestyle, with no minimum or maximum shift requirement and weekday and weekend hours available. They set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, while trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. The role also includes access to a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, plus a 15% discount on Petco products and services. Vetco Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Hospital equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic tables and full anesthesia monitoring. Neither setting requires overnight or emergency on-call shifts.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
- A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at Vetco Total Care full-service hospitals.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
- At vaccination clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
- At full-service hospitals, provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
- Perform shift functions permitted by applicable state licensing, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
- Comply with local, state, and federal mandates.
