About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians work in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgeries, emergency care, or illness care. They are primarily located in Petco stores, with some in mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, using equipment that includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital shifts do not involve overnight or emergency on-call work. Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online with no minimum or maximum shift requirement, choose from weekday and weekend hours, and set their own rate for each shift. Veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, with no agency fees. The appointment-based model helps manage patient flow and supports leaving on time, while trained staff handles operations. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements. The position includes a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
