About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services relief veterinarians can work in Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. These clinics are primarily located inside Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, using equipment such as digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call work.

Relief veterinarians use flexible online scheduling to select shifts, with no minimum or maximum shift requirement and weekday and weekend hours available. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift and may continue practicing outside Petco shifts. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, and trained staff handle operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At Vaccination Clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
