About The Position

The Release of Information Specialist processes medical record release requests accurately and efficiently while providing high-quality customer service. The role safeguards patient privacy by ensuring access is limited to authorized individuals and that each release complies with the request or authorization, departmental policy, and HIPAA regulations. The position also performs related administrative and customer-service duties.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Maintain confidentiality and security of medical information and ensure releases comply with applicable requests or authorizations, departmental policy, and HIPAA regulations.

Nice To Haves

Certification in Health Information Management (RHIT or RHIA).

Responsibilities

Review and validate requests for release of medical information according to departmental policies and procedures.
Scan and enter requests into the appropriate release-of-information database application for processing.
Determine which records may be released by reviewing requestor information in accordance with departmental and HIPAA guidelines.
Coordinate and communicate with applicable departments and off-site record storage vendors to obtain relevant portions of medical records.
Process approved requests according to departmental policies and procedures while maintaining medical privacy and preventing unauthorized disclosures.
Assist with administrative duties, including serving walk-in customers and processing incoming faxes, mail, telephone inquiries, and internal requests for information.
Perform other related duties as required.
