About The Position

SompoRe is offering a 10-week development internship on its Professional Lines team for individuals interested in the insurance and reinsurance industry. The program provides professional growth and may offer a potential long-term opportunity for successful participants. Based in the New York, NY office, the intern will learn alongside experienced underwriters through on-the-job learning and workplace mentoring, gain exposure to business units and underwriting philosophy, and interact with departments involved in the underwriting process. Interns can also participate in leadership learning, networking events, and an intern project presented to their manager and mentor.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or other degree program studying Risk Management, Finance, or a related major.
• Interest in learning reinsurance contract and language skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with rapidly changing priorities and demands.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• At least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
• Local to the NYC area and/or able to provide their own housing and transportation.

Responsibilities

• Gain an understanding of the company’s underwriting philosophy.
• Assist with underwriting new and renewal business.
• Assist with account processing.
• Analyze and research current and proposed accounts.
• Assist in analyzing market trends and preparing underwriters for meetings and audits.
• Participate in intern-program and departmental projects, such as market analysis, line-of-business research, and product development.
• Accompany underwriters to internal meetings and occasional external marketing calls.
• Assist the team with special projects.
