About The Position

SompoRe is seeking a Reinsurance Underwriting Intern for its Surety team. The 10-week internship is a development program intended to provide professional growth and potential long-term opportunities in the insurance and reinsurance industry. Based in the Morristown, New Jersey office, the intern will learn alongside experienced underwriters through on-the-job training, workplace mentoring, and interaction with departments involved in underwriting. The program also includes leadership learning sessions, networking activities, and an intern project presented to a manager and mentor.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or other degree program studying Risk Management, Finance, or a related major.
• Interest in learning reinsurance contracts and language.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with rapidly changing priorities and demands.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• At least 18 years old.
• Authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
• Local to the NYC area and/or able to provide their own housing and transportation.

Responsibilities

• Gain an understanding of the Company’s underwriting philosophy.
• Assist with underwriting new and renewal business.
• Assist with account processing.
• Research and analyze current and proposed accounts and help analyze market trends.
• Help prepare underwriters for meetings and audits.
• Participate in intern-program and departmental projects, including work such as market analysis, line-of-business research, and product development.
• Accompany underwriters at internal meetings and occasional external marketing calls.
• Assist the team with special projects.
