About The Position

SompoRe is hiring an intern for its Professional Lines team. The 10-week development program offers professional growth and potential long-term opportunity for individuals interested in the insurance and reinsurance industry. Based in the company’s New York, NY office, the intern will learn alongside experienced underwriters through on-the-job learning and mentoring, and will interact with departments involved in underwriting. The program also includes leadership learning, networking with peers, executives and outside brokerage firms, and a project presented to the intern’s manager and mentor.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or degree program studying Risk Management, Finance, or a related major.
• Interest in learning reinsurance contract and language skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with rapidly changing priorities and demands.
• Strong proficiency using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• At least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
• Local to the NYC area and/or able to provide their own housing and transportation.

Responsibilities

• Gain an understanding of the company’s underwriting philosophy.
• Assist in underwriting new and renewal business.
• Assist with account processing.
• Analyze and research current and proposed accounts, assist in analyzing market trends, and help prepare underwriters for meetings and audits.
• Participate in intern-program and department projects, such as market analysis, line-of-business research, and product development.
• Accompany underwriters to internal meetings and occasional external marketing calls.
• Assist the team with special projects.
