Saint Luke’s North Hospital offers new graduates opportunities for nursing roles across specialties, including emergency care, medical-surgical, cardiovascular services, and intermediate care. The nurse residency program is based on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s Transition to Practice model. All new graduate BSNs and ADNs hired at Saint Luke’s participate in the program, which supports clinical competency and professional practice behaviors throughout the first year as an RN. As part of the 12-month program, new graduate nurses are paired with experienced nurses and clinical educators. A preceptor works closely with each nurse during orientation to support their transition to the unit. Mentors and facilitators support professional development and involvement in Saint Luke’s shared governance. The clinical nurse uses the nursing process and performs patient care, delegates patient care tasks, and supervises other patient care staff. The nurse may coordinate the plan of care for assigned patients and consult with other members of the health care team as indicated to support optimal patient outcomes. The nurse demonstrates proficiency and follows applicable policies, rules, guidelines, and procedures.
