About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides individualized nursing care using the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes and planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role is based in a Trauma Medical Surgical Unit that cares for adult medical and surgical trauma patients. The unit has more than 32 beds and provides care for a broad range of medical patients and general surgeries, including vascular surgery, trauma, and orthopedic trauma. Sanford Health is a Level I Trauma Center and is recognized as a Hip Fracture Center of Excellence. The unit is busy and fast-paced, with high patient turnover. Patients have an average length of stay of three days and the average daily census is 31. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4–5 on days and evenings and 1:5–6 on nights. Teamwork, safety, clear communication, and delegation are priorities. The unit welcomes new graduates and can provide a foundation for exploring other clinical units. The RN collaborates with interprofessional colleagues, including physicians, to plan, implement, and evaluate care. The nurse practices within the full scope of nursing expertise and applies age- and population-specific standards in the assigned clinical setting. Care may include preventive care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up across the continuum of care. The RN is responsible for care planning and coordination, patient assessment and education, triage, and other nursing interventions, while following the Nurse Practice Act and applicable administrative rules in the state of practice and licensure.
