About The Position

The Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse (RN) delivers direct patient care and patient education in an outpatient setting. In Mayo Clinic’s GI Endoscopy practice on Alfred 6, RNs care for adult patients and may work in Procedural or Intake/Recovery, with cross-coverage as patient needs require. Intake RNs complete focused histories and assessments before endoscopy, educate patients about procedures, and review medical histories, medications, and allergies to help determine readiness for the scheduled procedure. Recovery RNs monitor patients after sedation, continuing physiologic monitoring until discharge criteria are met. Intake and Recovery RNs may also assist in the endoscopy suite, including room setup, delegated hands-on assistance to the physician and procedural team, documentation of supplies, procedures, and specimens, medication administration, and history review. When moderate sedation is needed, the RN is responsible for patient sedation. The role involves collaboration with physicians and other healthcare team members in a fast-paced, highly unpredictable environment. It requires expert critical thinking, careful attention to detail, time management, multitasking, autonomous functioning, and comfort using multiple computer applications. RNs are trained to interpret ECG rhythms and are expected to obtain ACLS certification within their first 3–6 months of employment. The RN coordinates nursing care, including direct care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of nursing care according to Mayo Clinic’s Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The role also includes leadership through precepting, formal or informal leadership, and quality-improvement activities; delegation of care according to staff skill and experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability; and potentially participation in committees or projects. A subset of employees may need to drive a personal vehicle as part of the role. New graduate nurses should apply through Mayo Clinic’s Nurse Residency Program posting.
