About The Position

The Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse (RN) delivers direct patient care and education in an outpatient setting. This role is in Mayo Clinic’s GI Endoscopy practice on Alfred 6, caring for adult patients. RNs may work in the Procedural or Intake/Recovery area and may cross-cover based on patient needs. In Intake, the RN completes a focused history and patient assessment before endoscopy, educates patients about procedures, and reviews medical history, medications, and allergies to determine whether the patient can proceed. In Recovery, the RN monitors patients after sedation until they meet discharge criteria. Intake/Recovery RNs also assist in the endoscopy suite, including room setup, delegated hands-on assistance to the physician, documentation of supplies, procedures, and specimens, medication administration, and history review. When moderate sedation is required, the RN is responsible for patient sedation. The RN collaborates with physicians and other healthcare team members to provide patient care. The setting is fast-paced and unpredictable and requires attention to detail, critical thinking, time management, multitasking, autonomous practice, and comfort managing multiple computer applications. RNs are trained to interpret ECG rhythms and are expected to attain ACLS certification within their first 3–6 months of employment. The RN coordinates nursing care, including direct care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The role includes planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of care in accordance with the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through activities such as precepting, formal or informal leadership, and quality improvement; delegates care according to skill, experience, acuity, resources, and fiscal accountability; and may participate in committees or projects. Some employees may be required to use a personal vehicle as part of their role. New graduate nurses are directed to apply through the Nurse Residency Program. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, subject to state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or an equivalent certification.
