The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Psychiatric Services Unit coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across care settings and throughout the continuum of care to meet patient and family needs, and functions within the Mayo Nursing Care Model by planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the RN’s practice. The RN provides leadership through preceptor responsibilities, informal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. The role includes delegating patient care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. The RN uses strong communication, mentoring, and teaching skills and may participate in committees or projects. Newly graduated RNs with less than 12 months of practice experience who are hired into a scheduled FTE RN position are automatically enrolled in the Nurse Residency Program; no separate application or enrollment is required. Nurses new to Mayo Clinic receive an extensive orientation program, regardless of experience. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, which requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
