The Adult ICU (AICU) is an 8-bed Medical/Surgical Adult ICU at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children and the campus’s only adult critical care unit. The unit primarily cares for critically ill medical patients, along with antepartum, postpartum, GYN oncology, GYN, ENT, and other adult patients requiring intensive monitoring. Nurses are trained to manage critical situations including hemorrhage, critical obstetrics, CRRT, ventilators, and titrated drips. Four beds are equipped for fetal monitoring, which is monitored by an L&D nurse on campus for critical antepartum patients. AICU nurses respond to all adult Rapid Response and Code Blue situations at the Women & Children campus. Nurses work closely with healthcare providers to deliver excellent, compassionate care. Orientation involves working with experienced staff and typically lasts 6–12 weeks, depending on experience. Staff can participate in Shared Governance, Clinical Ladder programs, and continuing education opportunities available online and at Corporate University.
