The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and the continuum of care, and is accountable for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of care for assigned patients within the Mayo Nursing Care Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality-improvement efforts. The RN delegates care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources. The role also calls for strong communication, mentoring, and teaching skills, and may include committee or project participation. Pre-Op/PACU nurses care for patients before and immediately after surgical procedures; they do not perform surgery. Duties span Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU. Nurses assess and resolve pre-operative issues, start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and explain pre-operative instructions, patient rights, and procedures. In PACU, they care for patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. The department is a fast-paced unit using critical-care nursing concepts, with stated nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:3 in Pre-Op, 1:2 in Phase 1 PACU, and 1:3 in Phase 2 PACU. New hires to Mayo Clinic or the Pre-Op/PACU team must be available to orient Monday through Friday for the first week, then 3–4 days per week for the following 4–5 weeks. Applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance of campus to meet a 45-minute on-call requirement. The role is eligible for TN sponsorship; successful sponsorship requires state licensure and VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
