The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care, functioning within the Mayo Nursing Care Model and planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of care for assigned patients. Practice is based on the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality-improvement efforts. The RN delegates care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources. Strong communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are expected; the RN may also participate in committees or projects. Pre-Op/PACU nurses care for patients before and immediately after surgery, in Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU. They assess and address pre-operative issues, start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and provide instructions about procedures and patient rights. In PACU, they care for patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. The department is a fast-paced unit that uses critical-care nursing concepts, with 72 beds, 95 nurses, 11 patient care technicians, and 8 clinical assistants. Staffing ratios are 1 RN to 3 patients in Pre-Op, 1:2 in Phase 1 PACU, and 1:3 in Phase 2 PACU. Applicants new to Mayo Clinic or the Pre-Op/PACU team must be available to orient Monday through Friday during the first week, then 3–4 days per week for the following 4–5 weeks. Applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance of campus to meet the 45-minute on-call requirement. The role is eligible for TN sponsorship; successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
