The Registered Nurse works in the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) at Aurora West Allis Medical Center in West Allis, Wisconsin. The 16-bed unit cares for moderately stable patients with elevated risk of instability, including ICU step-down patients, patients chronically ventilated through a tracheostomy, and patients at higher risk of decompensation based on laboratory trends, vital signs, and comorbidities. The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3–4 on both days and nights. The unit has a supportive, collaborative, teaching culture and an equal mix of experienced staff and new graduates. This full-time weekend program is 36 hours per week, worked in 12-hour shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM. The schedule is either Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, or Saturday and Sunday plus one other weekday shift. A 50% holiday requirement applies. The nurse builds foundational skills through a preceptor-directed orientation and develops skills in triage, laboratory interpretation, disease pathophysiology, pharmacology, time management, and communication for patients with intermediate-acuity acute and chronic conditions. The role coordinates comprehensive patient care, collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, and provides continuity of patient-centered care as part of a skilled nursing team serving diverse patient populations.
