The Registered Nurse Resident position provides a transition between nursing school and bedside nursing in an acute care setting. The residency is a planned, comprehensive period in which registered nurses acquire the knowledge and skills to deliver safe, quality clinical care. Residents receive classroom instruction, skills and simulation labs, debriefing and mentoring sessions, and clinical experience under the supervision of an experienced RN preceptor. The residency is expected to last 12 months, including three months actively working with a preceptor. Following successful completion of the residency period, residents may apply for available positions within St. Charles Health System. The resident provides care to assigned patients throughout the shift within the scope of RN licensure and under the direction of an RN preceptor. Residents are hired for a specific unit and may not transfer to a different unit or change FTE for 12 months from the start of residency. After the first three months, residents apply to open full-time RN positions on their home unit. Accepted applicants are asked to commit to working at St. Charles Health System for at least two years.
