About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN), Quality Assurance (QA) Supervisor evaluates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining security requirements. The role performs quality improvement activities in the daily operations of Health Services and carries out department duties in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local standards and regulations. The supervisor coordinates quality assurance activities, monitors staff and process compliance, supports training and corrective action plans, and assists with audits and reviews by outside agencies. The role analyzes performance data, identifies opportunities for improvement, measures results, and reports findings and recommendations to management. The supervisor also helps coordinate patient care, orients detainees or inmates to available medical services, and oversees training and compliance for medical orderlies handling contaminated waste and surfaces.

Requirements

Associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an approved program and graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state where the facility is located; maintain a current copy of the license on file at the facility.
Ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnoses and provide appropriate follow-through treatment.
Active, valid driver’s license.
At least 21 years of age.
United States citizenship.

Nice To Haves

Two years of direct work experience preferred.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Competence in crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care preferred.

Responsibilities

Maintain effective working relationships with correctional personnel, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.
Use established corporate and correctional policies and procedures when making decisions.
Monitor staff compliance with facility policies and unit directives, and counsel employees who violate policies after consultation with management.
Ensure relevant information, including policies, procedures, in-service information, and problems, is communicated to supervisors and supervised personnel.
Monitor and ensure staff compliance with applicable pharmacy laws and client standards.
Organize education and training, and ensure staff receive training related to corrective action plans.
Assist with inquiries from outside agencies during audits or reviews.
Assist in developing processes and procedures that ensure quality patient services and compliance with professional standards.
Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
Analyze and monitor performance data to identify trends, reduce costs, and improve patient services.
Identify opportunities for improvement, investigate root causes of variation, develop and implement change options, measure results, and recommend ongoing enhancements.
Identify and help resolve non-compliance, and facilitate integration of standards into work processes and systems.
Measure the impact of improvement initiatives and ensure improvement activities are documented and reported as appropriate.
Use performance-enhancing tools such as cause-effect diagrams, flow charts, and brainstorming to support improvement, problem analysis, and measurement.
Plan and organize quality control programs and activities.
Provide management with recommendations and reports concerning quality control programs and processes as needed.
Ensure detainees or inmates arriving at the facility are oriented to available services and procedures for obtaining medical services.
Ensure medical orderlies are trained in handling contaminated waste and cleaning contaminated surfaces, and monitor their compliance with instructions.
Conduct random audits of medical records, logs, sharps, narcotic counts, outside referrals, and sick call; counsel employees or provide in-service training on identified errors; submit findings to management for review and recommendations.
Coordinate, participate in, and oversee quality assurance activities; recommend monitoring needs and plans for correcting deficiencies; and report problem areas in writing to management.
Monitor informal detainee grievances for trends and potential improvement opportunities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
