Registered Nurse-Medical Surgical / Intermediate Care
About The Position
Join the nursing team at Magnet Recognized Abbott Northwestern Hospital, providing whole-patient care to a diverse population in a collaborative, inclusive environment. The professional nurse assesses and treats human responses to actual or potential health problems and establishes a therapeutic relationship with patients and families. As a leader and integrator of care, the nurse is accountable for planning, coordinating, and evaluating patient care needs. The role primarily serves acutely ill patients on hospital units across a range of medical issues and supports recovery from surgery. The position is a 0.9 FTE (72 hours per two-week pay period), with permanent 12-hour night shifts and every-third-weekend rotation. Candidates are considered through one of these experience tiers: Tier 1, medical/surgical experience with at least one month on a progressive care unit; Tier 2, at least six months of acute inpatient hospital experience; or Tier 3, long-term care or transitional care unit experience, or a new graduate RN.
Requirements
- Associate's or vocational degree.
- Licensed Registered Nurse credential: Minnesota Board of Nursing license required upon hire when working in Minnesota; Wisconsin Department of Safety & Professional Services license required upon hire when working in Wisconsin.
- Meet at least one BLS requirement: current American Heart Association certification, current American Red Cross certification, or Allina in-house BLS training within 30 days of hire.
- For locations that require it, meet at least one advanced life support requirement: current American Heart Association ACLS certification, current American Red Cross ALS certification, or Allina in-house ACLS training within 60 days of hire.
- Meet one of the experience tiers: Tier 1—medical/surgical experience and at least one month on a progressive care unit; Tier 2—at least six months of acute inpatient hospital experience; or Tier 3—long-term care or transitional care unit experience, or new graduate RN.
- Able to lift up to 32 lbs. occasionally and up to 25 lbs. frequently, consistent with the Allina Safe Patient Moving Policy.

Responsibilities
- Assess patient and family needs, identify outcomes, establish and supervise the plan of care, and modify it as needed.
- Maintain education and competencies to provide proficient, high-quality patient care.
- Incorporate evidence-based nursing practice and applicable statutes, rules, and regulations into care planning.
- Collaborate with patients and families to establish realistic, measurable expected outcomes based on nursing diagnoses, capabilities, goals, available resources, and continuity-of-care plans.
- Identify outcomes that are age-appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic, and attainable.
- Coordinate, collaborate, and delegate appropriately to ensure care is delivered safely and effectively.
- Fulfill organizational requirements.
- When acting as Charge Nurse, coordinate, delegate, and direct unit operations and collaborate with staff, leadership, and other disciplines.
- When acting as Preceptor, identify the orientee’s learning needs, plan learning experiences, and validate clinical competence.
