Registered Nurse (RN) - Intermediate Care Unit (Stepdown) - New Grads
About The Position
Sentara Leigh Hospital is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) for our Intermediate Care Unit (Stepdown). This role is for new graduates in their first year of practice, providing nursing and patient care while transitioning from academic preparation to independent professional practice. Working under the guidance of preceptors and experienced nurses, and supported by the organization's nurse residency and onboarding program, this role involves assessing patients, delivering care, administering medications, and documenting in the electronic health record. The Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) is a 24-bed stepdown unit for patients with medical and surgical diagnoses, including acute CVAs, ventilator-dependent patients, GI bleeds, chronic renal failure, diabetes, and post-operative surgical patients requiring frequent monitoring. New graduates are welcomed and will participate in an 11-week Transition to Practice program, which is the start of a comprehensive 6-month residency program.
Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
- Registered nursing License (Required)
- Students in the process of obtaining a Registered Nursing License.
- BLS required within 90 days of hire
- None required

- Students in the process of completing an accredited nursing program.
Responsibilities
- Delivers nursing and patient care during the first year of practice while transitioning from academic preparation to independent professional practice.
- Assesses patients, delivers care, administers medications, and documents in the electronic health record within a growing scope of competency.
- Takes on progressively greater autonomy and patient complexity as competencies are validated, moving toward the full, independent practice of a staff registered nurse.
