About The Position

The House Supervisor - RN facilitates the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective nursing care. This role assists in the operation of the nursing department according to the legal guidelines of mental health care in the State of Texas. The supervisor supports nursing staff in interpreting and implementing policies, procedures, and nursing standards of care. The position is responsible for delivering quality general/psychiatric nursing care to patients to support the hospital and program philosophy of care, ensuring the safety and well-being of each patient.

Requirements

  • ADN or BSN from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • CPR and Certified in facility approved verbal de-escalation and physical crisis management techniques within 30 days of hire and prior to completion of orientation required.
  • Valid Texas RN license in good standing required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience of healthcare management experience preferred.
  • Experience in an inpatient mental health setting at a management level preferred.
  • Clinical supervision and basic skills in personnel management concepts and methods.
  • Basic teaching or training skills preferred.
  • Able to understand and apply applicable standards and regulations.
  • Must pass a medication administration exam before administering medications.
  • Must successfully complete training including restraint and seclusion policies prior to assuming patient care responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment: Through a systematic process of interaction with patient, the patient's significant others, and health care providers, collects and analyzes data regarding the patient's physical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural and anticipated discharge needs; determines patient's alcohol or drug toxicity; identifies signs of withdrawal; conducts screenings or assessments to determine treatment needs.
  • Planning: Ensures each patient's unique needs are identified and incorporated into a comprehensive and individualized care plan, considering the severity of the disease, condition, impairment or disability.
  • Implementation/Care of the patient: Renders care and treatment in a competent manner based on current chemical dependency and psychiatric nursing knowledge and standards; evaluates care against goals and plan of care and revises periodically as appropriate.
  • Continuum of Care: Facilitates the patient's access to the appropriate level of care and setting.
  • Supervision of patient care services: Identifies and oversees the operation of the nursing program and services necessary to meet key mental health needs of the community in keeping with the hospital's philosophy and goals; monitors, evaluates, and assists in modifying clinical services, utilizing the input and skills of the nursing staff.
  • Maintenance of safe and therapeutic milieu: Assumes responsibility for maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for all patients.
  • Working Relationships: Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, health professional affiliates, and nursing staff. Participates in activities that enhance professional growth and development.
  • Provides direct care to patients, which includes facilitating social and emotional needs, supervising medication schedules, evaluating patient progress and patient's access to the appropriate level of care and setting.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary professionals to determine and provide the best possible care for patients.
  • Provides social support for patients by creating and encouraging patients to take advantage of opportunities such as support groups, social activities, and other therapeutic measures.
  • Conducts intake assessments through interviews with patients and relatives to gather case history.
  • Makes nursing diagnosis of the medical and emotional status of patients and recommends treatment options.
  • Consults with psychiatrists and other behavioral health staff in designing appropriate treatment plans for clients.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation of patient treatments, immunizations, laboratory results, notes reactions to psychotropic drugs and other medications, written charts, patient activities and progress according to standard medical record keeping and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Assists the client in understanding the nature of emotional disturbances and accepting the need for treatment.
  • Complies with laws, rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures.
  • Uses professional judgment to ascertain and to apply appropriate intervention techniques with patients in crisis.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and patients.
  • Tests for vital signs of pain and ensures treatments of pain and arranges further medical attention when necessary.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as filing, answering phones and computer entry of progress notes.
  • Organizes the activities and schedules for medical and/or non-medical tasks of the Child, Adolescent and Adult and support staff for a given shift.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Upholds the Organization's ethics and customer service standards.
