About The Position

CHEO is a global leader in pediatric health, serving over 500,000 children and youth annually. The Refrigeration Technician role is within Facilities Management & Planning and is a temporary full-time position until October 2026. The primary responsibility is to maintain and install all Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic components within CHEO. This includes the design, coordination, and implementation of work, often in collaboration with contractors. The technician will be responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining refrigeration, cooling, combined heating/cooling systems, and geo-exchange systems. These systems are critical for storing and transporting medical supplies, drugs, food, and other essential items. The role involves working closely with the maintenance team to ensure efficient and safe system operation, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to department and capital projects. The ideal candidate must be available for scheduled overtime as required.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid National Journeyman Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Red Seal) (Essential)
  • Minimum of 5 years and valid qualifications as a National Journeyman Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Red Seal) (Essential)

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lay out, install, start-up, connect, maintain, service, repair, test, verify, commission, and decommission refrigeration and air conditioning systems, electronic components, and their accessories, including refrigerators and chiller systems.
  • Install and connect piping for the purpose of conveying all types of refrigerants used for both primary and secondary heating and cooling.
  • Check efficiency outputs and parameters; inspect and check operation and integrity of components; determine set points; replace defective, leaking, discolored, and worn components; perform shut-downs and lock outs; adjust pressures and controls; clean and lubricate components; check calibrations; reassemble and repair components and systems; start-up, test and charge the systems.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, and connect pipe to functional components and utilities; service, test, adjust, commission, and decommission the system.
  • Assure work area is kept safe and clean.
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
