About The Position

Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring at SUN Community Schools across Portland! This is a talent pool to collect names of people interested in future part-time or seasonal jobs. When jobs open, selected candidates may be contacted for an interview. The following positions are forecasted vacancies: Counselor, Lead Counselor, Assistant Instructor, General Instructor, Certified Teacher, and Specialized Arts Instructor. SUN Community Schools offer academic support and enrichment classes to students in Multnomah County, focusing on helping students and families from underserved communities achieve self-sufficiency. They provide after-school activities, camps, and evening enrichment classes for youth and adults, including fitness, sports, and arts.

Requirements

  • Can create a welcoming and friendly environment.
  • Knows about the assigned recreation area.
  • Can talk clearly with different groups of people.
  • Can notice and handle safety and emergency situations.
  • Can solve problems and help with customer concerns.
  • Teaching Certification or License (for Certified Teacher job).
  • Minimum of 500 hours of prior teaching experience for each discipline(s) (for Specialized Arts Instructor job).
  • Have had significant traditional or non-traditional professional learning and/or development (for Specialized Arts Instructor job).
  • Must be at least 15 years old (for Counselor, Instructor I, Instructor II).
  • Must be at least 18 years old (for Lead Counselor, Instructor III, Specialized Arts Instructor).

Responsibilities

  • Organize, plan, and lead a variety of activities including art, crafts, music, performance, science, games, nature, and sports.
  • Support the physical, social, and cognitive development of preschool and school-aged participants.
  • Maintain discipline and safety while monitoring youth.
  • Consistently model appropriate behavior.
  • Maintain accurate program records.
  • Perform maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Help lead after-school activities, provide program leadership and direction to counselor staff, and assist with program data entry (Lead Counselor).
  • Prepare and present introductory lessons/activities for programs and classes for a variety of age ranges.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere, engage with park and facility guests, provide excellent customer service, and act as a resource for PP&R information.
  • Maintain clean facilities and/or park spaces, monitor use of space and needs of guests.
  • Be proactive in addressing potential safety concerns.
  • Uphold the PP&R code of conduct.
  • Communicate with supervisor, rangers, and security under established guidelines.
  • Monitor participation and complete needed paperwork and record keeping.
  • Support delivery of a variety of classes and activities as an aid to program delivery (Assistant Instructor).
  • Responsible for lesson planning, class content, and instruction for a variety of general recreation activities (General Instructor).
  • Instruct academic curriculum-based classes in SUN Community School programs (Certified Teacher).
  • Teach all artistic practices, including culturally specific styles and genres (Specialized Arts Instructor).
